Wessex Water Hosepipe ban

Residents will be aware of the hosepipe regulations that are in place across the Wessex Water supply area, following the company’s announcement this week. The first such restriction in the region for 50 years.

Wessex Water supplies the water to Poundbury and the restrictions therefore apply across the development. Full details of the temporary usage restrictions can be found on the Wessex Water website.

Alongside the domestic regulations, there are two elements with particular relevance to Poundbury:

  • Newly planted trees and hedges are exempt from the restrictions. This exemption is intended to reduce losses during the current dry conditions, of recently established planting.
  • Ornamental fountains and water features that do not contain fish must be switched off for the foreseeable future. In line with these requirements, water features across Poundbury, including the recently cleaned Bowes Lyon Fountain, will remain dormant until the restrictions are lifted.

The introduction of these measures reflects the exceptionally dry conditions being experienced across the region. Wessex Water has emphasised the importance of not only complying with the restrictions, but also taking all reasonable steps to reduce the use of treated (potable) drinking water wherever possible.

Residents can play an important role by using water carefully, limiting non-human consumption and helping to conserve supplies during this period of exceptionally high demand and limited rainfall.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding. Please follow Wessex Water for updates as to any further restrictions and hopefully an announcement of their lifting before too long.
